My clients sister was the lead trustee, my client being the other trustee. Unfortunately the lead trustee has died and my client is unable to find the registration Number that was allocated by HMRC. The Trustees had arranged the registration themselves.
How do I go about finding out what the registration was?
Your client in her capacity as a trustee should contact HMRC trusts (one of the options is for trust registration queries) - they will probably not speak to you directly as an agent (although if you were both in the room together or on a conference call they might, so you could guide the conversation) - she should explain the circumstances i.e. that as the lead trustee has died, she is now the replacement lead trustee and needs to find the trust registration number in order to claim the trust and update the details accordingly. If she is lucky, she may get someone helpful.
Thank you, Maxine, that’s very helpful, although getting to speak to someone in HMRC, these days can take an age, so as there is not an urgency, perhaps I should prepare a letter countersigned by my client, informing them of the lead, trustee’s death, and requesting the registration number.
