Grant application for death in 1969

Hi,

I need to remove an old charge on the LR title and we have been advised that a grant is needed to do that. The deceased in whose name the charge is died in 1969 and no grant was taken out as far as we can ascertain. Can someone please let me know how we go about obtaining such a grant. We have no idea of the value of the estate and there was no Will. This is needed only to remove the charge.

I would be tempted to go back and question why a Grant is required to remove a charge? Is there still a liability or is it simply a ‘hangover’ where someone previously failed to remove the charge?

Thank you for your response. There is evidence to suggest the charge was settled but not removed from the Title, so a hangover charge as you indicate. HMLR have issued a requisition to say that a grant will be needed.
