R40 rebate advice painfully slow

Many of my clients rebates are taking incredibly long time to process the R40 forms, does anyone have any advice for speeding up the process or best way to chase this up. In many occasions its taking months and even years.

I did suggest registering minors for self assessment for a faster return, anyone know of the process for getting a UTR for a minor.

Much Appreciated.

Hi Isaac

Are you doing them online?

No the paper r40’s are posted off by the clients… is there another way? most claims are minors.

Hi Isaac

It looks like you have to claim by post if you are claiming for someone else. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-refund-of-income-tax-deducted-from-savings-and-investments

I’m afraid we have had the same problem and there doesn’t seem a lot our compliance staff can do to speeds things up or even monitor progress for individual clients - many of whom are minors. It doesn’t help (unless things have more recently changed) that they no longer seem to give repayment claims reference numbers and minors often don’t have their NINo yet. We had one instance (for two young brothers) recently where we had to submit the R40 forms three times over the course of 18 months (and get them signed each time), and rather understandably the grandparent involved as a Trustee thought it was our fault.

We experience the same, takes an age.
As Peter said with no NINO for many claimants they often seem to go missing.
We have registered a few minors for SA to speed it up, but HMRC do their best to not set them up within SA.
