I am acting for executors and the deceased client has shareholdings in a Hong Kong registered company. The executors have been told that they need to reseal the UK Grant of Probate in Hong Kong. I have resealed in Australia before but never Hong Kong.
Has anyone done this? Can you deal directly with the Hong Kong Probate Registry or is a Hong Kong solicitor required?
Any idea of approximate cost? The shareholdings are only valued at around £2,000.
I had to investigate this a couple of years ago and at that time concluded that it was not possible for me to deal directly with the HK probate registry. I have moved firms since then so don’t have access to my notes, but recall that costs for obtaining the reseal were going to be about £2,000, or possibly more. In my case the value of the shares was uncertain, with no dividends and no ready market, and I elected not to take any action because in that case the widow and child of the deceased remained in the property so would receive any communications.
I did post on the forum at the time (it will be in the archives) and the responses I received confirmed the approximate costs.
